Sweet Adelines celebrate 25 years

By: By Jennifer O'Meara, Northumberland News

The Northumberland Chorus of Sweet Adelines are preparing to celebrate its past its future at the choir’s 25th anniversary concert on Nov. 24.

'Looking Back, Moving Forward’ will feature guest performer Christian country music artist Cheryl Dunn, winner of the 2005 Covenant and 2003 Vibe Awards for Country Bluegrass Album of the Year.

The first half of the show will honour the history of the chorus, featuring old dress, old favourites and screens displaying photos from the group’s past.

“We’re going to talk a little about what the chorus has done and achieved,” said choir director Maria Godfrey.

The second half will feature love songs and newer music that the chorus has just learned. “The second set is more of a love scene and where we are going,” explained Ms. Godfrey.

The third set will kick off with Ms. Dunn singing what Ms. Godfrey calls “inspirational songs”. The end of the show will be a Christmas concert, where Ms. Dunn will join the Sweet Adelines for the big finale.

The choir belongs to Sweet Adelines International, which means chorus members can visit other choruses while they travel and take musical training at international music schools in the United States and regional music schools in Buffalo or Kingston.

Looking Back, Moving Forward is at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 at the Calvary Pentecostal Church, 401 Croft St. E., Port Hope. Tickets are $10 each, available from any chorus member or by calling Maria at 905-349-3558 or Pat at 905-372-0911.
